Game development and design
This is a subject for you who want to make your own games, learn about today’s game industry and the possibilities that exist out there. You don’t need previous experience, just a love for gaming and a strong interest in making your own games.
Are you curious as to how games are created and what makes them such good entertainment? We will use the year to make games and find the answers to these questions. Your creative and analytical faculties will be developed, and you will get to know people who work in the gaming industry.
At Sunnhordland Folkehøgskule we aim to give you an insight into all aspects of the subject, and it’s fun. We focus on engines that allow us to make games fast so that afterwards we can fine tune them and establish what works well and what needs to be changed.

Content
To begin with, we make classic 2D arcade / retro games in Unity3D . At the same time you will learn to plan your development processes, write design documents and learn how to test your ideas effectively.
After this we delve deep into Unity3D and with the help of the program language C# learn to make 3D games. We also offer the opportunity to work with VR headsets and produce VR games.
In addition you will learn game analysis of existing, available games to develop an understanding of their concepts and applications. This awareness will assist you in your own game production.

Video games design and you
If you want to realize your ideas and explore the world of gaming, then this line is for you. You can find out if you want to go further after you leave us, and if you do, our programme prepares you for higher education in gaming such as high school, or if you want to start your own firm. We have only one requirement: you must truly want to make games.
For those who are interested in starting their own firm, students can apply for a second year place as a second year company. Here you are afforded the freedom to go about creating a product and marketing it from your own office at the school.

Equipment
You must have your own laptop, PC or Mac, not more than 3 years old. The machine must contain Windows 10 / OSX 10.14 or later. You will use this machine for almost all the assignments throughout the year, so it needs to function well.
We also recommend that you bring your own headset preferably with noise cancelling.

Study trips
London: during this study trip in the autumn we explore London’s rich culture and history. We visit museums and exhibitions along with other relevant places which will inspire us in our game design.
In addition we are present and/or participate in "Spillkonferansen Konsoll" in Bergen and "Global Game Jam", which is one of the world’s biggest game jams. A few students also attend "Spillexpo" to demonstrate their games.
An additional source of interest and inspiration for game designers is the school’s optional tour to Japan.
All travel is dependent on the situation relating to safety and government restrictions that may apply at the time.
